Saint-Lon les Mines is located in the northern part of the region, midway between Dax and Peyrehorade. The location (at an approximate altitude of 100 metres/328 feet) makes it possible to see the Pyrenees mountains to the south, the "Pinhadar" (Landes forest) to the west and the neighbouring hillsides of Chalosse to the east.
Saint Lon les Mines gets its name from a lignite (brown coal) deposit mine exploited from 1918 to 1949. A mining museum tells the story of St Lon’s lignite mine from the period when it was first exploited in the 18th century until it closed in 1949.
However, farming stands out in the local landscape, fields interspersed with several renovated farms, stately buildings (castles and vassal houses) and even mansions.
